Harrison is a coterminous Town and Village in Westchester County, New York. That means the town and the village share the same boundaries and operate as one municipal government. It is not a separate Town of Harrison versus a separate Village of Harrison the way some New York places split those jobs. Historical and county planning summaries state Harrison was reorganized as a coterminous Town and Village in 1975. Official site: harrison-ny.gov.
Municipal building. Town/Village Hall is at 1 Heineman Place, Harrison, NY 10528, phone (914) 670-3000. The town site lists weekday hours Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with summer hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Confirm current hours and meeting calendars on the town site before you plan a closing or a permit visit.
Keep the map names separate when you write an offer or a listing brief:
Town/Village of Harrison - the municipality for the whole figure-eight shaped community east of White Plains. County planning summaries place North Castle to the north, the Town of Rye and the villages of Rye Brook and Port Chester to the east, the City of Rye to the southeast, the Town and Village of Mamaroneck to the south and southwest, and the City of White Plains to the west.
Downtown Harrison / Halstead Avenue - the southern commercial and residential core along Halstead Avenue, by the Metro-North Harrison station. This is the walkable strip buyers mean when they say "Harrison village" in conversation, even though the legal form is the coterminous Town/Village.
Purchase - a hamlet in the northern half of Harrison, not a separate town or village. Purchase College (SUNY Purchase), Manhattanville University, and parts of the I-287 corporate corridor sit here. Mail often uses ZIP 10577.
West Harrison - a named section toward the White Plains / Silver Lake edge, often associated with Lake Street and Silver Lake Preserve. It is still Harrison, not a separate municipality. Mail can use 10604 in places; ZIP codes are not municipal lines.
Other named places inside Harrison. Summaries also list Brentwood, Sunnyridge, Sterling Ridge / The Trails, and South Downtown. These are neighborhoods and place names, not separate governments.
ZIP codes are not town lines. Downtown and the municipal building use 10528. Purchase commonly uses 10577. Some West Harrison and edge addresses use 10604. Name the Town/Village of Harrison (and Purchase or West Harrison as the place name) on the brief, not just the ZIP.

Historical summaries state Harrison was established under a 1696 patent associated with John Harrison and co-investors, and that the area was known as Harrison's Purchase. The Town of Harrison was incorporated by New York State act on March 7, 1788. Early Quaker settlement around what is now Purchase is part of that story. Folklore about a horse ride setting the town line is folklore. Treat it as color, not a survey note.
Railroad suburb, not a factory town. Summaries state the railroad that became Metro-North's New Haven Line reached Harrison in 1848, with a dedicated station building coming later in the nineteenth century. Nearby White Plains, Port Chester, and Mamaroneck grew denser factory districts. Harrison stayed more residential and agricultural longer, then filled in as a Westchester rail suburb.
Parkways and estates. The Hutchinson River Parkway was extended through Harrison in 1929. Mid-twentieth-century subdivision of farms and estates (including Sunnyridge-era development near downtown) produced the mix of cluster, colonial, and larger-lot streets buyers still tour today.
Why "Town/Village" appears on letterhead. In the late 1960s, residents in Purchase pressed to incorporate as their own village. Town officials moved to make Harrison a village as well as a town so Purchase could not peel off. County planning materials mark the coterminous Town/Village structure from 1975. For buyers and sellers, the practical point is simple: one municipality, one set of municipal contacts at Heineman Place, and Purchase and West Harrison as sections inside that line.
Platinum Mile geography. Beginning in the late 1960s, office campuses lined the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) corridor through Purchase and neighboring Rye Brook / White Plains edges. Summaries associate that belt with names such as PepsiCo and MasterCard. It is a land-use fact on the map, not a claim about any one house.
That is history, not a claim about any current parcel. If a listing references a historic designation, confirm it in state and federal records.
Census and municipal summaries place Harrison at roughly 17.4 square miles total (about 16.8 square miles of land) in southeastern Westchester. The town's outline is often described as a figure eight: downtown Harrison in the south, Purchase and West Harrison in the north, with parkways and the rail line cutting the southern half into recognizable pockets.
Downtown / Halstead corridor. Halstead Avenue is the main street parallel to the New Haven Line. Century mixed-use buildings, newer rentals, two-family blocks, and single-family streets sit within a short walk of the station. When we say "walkable Harrison," we usually mean this strip and the blocks that feed it.
Purchase. Larger lots, campus edges, and corporate campuses dominate the northern half. Purchase is still Harrison for taxes, zoning, and school district questions. Do not write "Purchase, NY" as if it were a separate town government.
West Harrison / Silver Lake. The West Harrison section sits against the White Plains line and Silver Lake Preserve. Access is more constrained by lake, hills, and highway edges than downtown Halstead. Lake Street is the common approach in local directions.
We will not publish a median sale price, days-on-market claim, school ranking, or volume ranking for Harrison on this page. Use live listings and a dated MLS extract when you need numbers.
Rail (primary fact for most downtown searches). Harrison station is on Metro-North's New Haven Line. MTA describes it as an accessible station with elevators, ramps, tactile warning strips, and audiovisual passenger information. MTA lists three ticket machines on the westbound platform east of the overpass, no ticket office, and a waiting area and public restrooms daily from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Bee-Line bus connections are listed at the station. Orientation: mta.info/stations/harrison.
No invented commute minutes. TrainTime, the current New Haven Line timetable, and the morning you actually travel are the source of truth. We will not invent a door-to-Grand-Central number from a Harrison, Purchase, or West Harrison address.
Station-area TOD. Avalon Harrison at 332 Halstead Avenue is the mixed-use project built with Metro-North support at the station. State and MTA releases describe apartments, Halstead Avenue retail frontage, plazas tied to the station, and a Metro-North parking garage phase that opened August 23, 2021, with direct access toward the Connecticut-bound platform. Confirm current parking rules and retail hours with the operator and MTA before you plan a showing day around them.
Roads. Daily access for most addresses is by car. Summaries place the Hutchinson River Parkway, the Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287), I-684, and I-95 (New England Thruway) in or through the town. Wikipedia notes I-95 runs through without a Harrison interchange. NY-120, NY-120A, and NY-127 appear in local road lists. For live road conditions, use official New York State traveler information.
Local bus. MTA lists Bee-Line connections at Harrison station. Confirm current routes and schedules with Westchester County Bee-Line before you rely on them for a showing day.
Airport. Westchester County Airport (HPN) sits largely in the Purchase section of Harrison. Official orientation: airport.westchestercountyny.gov. We will not invent a drive time from a random Harrison address to the terminal.
When we show homes in Harrison, these are stops we actually send buyers, with official links so you can confirm hours yourself.
Hours change. Check them the morning of a showing. We do not treat a Yelp widget full of corporate cafeterias as a curated guide.
Silver Lake Preserve. Westchester County Parks describes a 236-acre preserve with woodland trails, fields, streams, and old stone foundations. The county lists the address as Old Lake Street, White Plains, NY 10604, open 8 a.m. to dusk year-round, phone (914) 231-4500. No restrooms. Fishing is not permitted. Dogs are not allowed. Unauthorized motor vehicles, including electric bikes and scooters, are not permitted. The preserve sits on the Harrison / White Plains edge and is the outdoor stop we name most often for West Harrison tours. Orientation: parks.westchestercountyny.gov/silver-lake-preserve. Check trail and pathway closure notices before you go.
Purchase College (SUNY Purchase). A public SUNY campus in the Purchase section, known for arts and liberal arts programs and for public performances and events. Orientation: purchase.edu. Confirm which events are open to the public on the college calendar. We will not repeat marketing rankings from any college page.
Manhattanville University. A private university campus in Purchase, including the historic Reid Castle administrative and event building. Orientation: manhattanville.edu.
Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens. Summaries describe an outdoor sculpture collection at the PepsiCo world headquarters campus in Purchase. Visiting rules and access can change. Confirm current public access before you send anyone.
Municipal and district recreation. Confirm pool, park, and program details with the Town/Village of Harrison and with Harrison Central School District facilities pages. Do not assume a private club membership is part of any house purchase unless the contract and club documents say so.
The Harrison Central School District publishes at harrisoncsd.org. District pages list Harrison High School, Louis M. Klein Middle School, Harrison Avenue Elementary School, Parsons Memorial Elementary School, Samuel J. Preston Elementary School, and Purchase Elementary School. Summaries place the high school and middle school in the downtown area, with elementary attendance tied to sections such as Purchase, West Harrison / Silver Lake, and downtown neighborhoods. Confirm the serving school for a specific parcel directly with the district. This page does not rank schools or describe who lives here.
Start with the municipality. Almost every Harrison mailing address still sits in the coterminous Town/Village of Harrison. Purchase and West Harrison are place names inside that line. Then confirm the school attendance zone, flood status, and whether the parcel is closer to Halstead rail life or Purchase campus / corporate-corridor life.
Taxes and parcel records. Use Town/Village contacts at 1 Heineman Place and Westchester County parcel tools for the tax map, assessment, and open items. Ask for current town, county, school, and special district bills. School taxes are billed separately from town and county cycles in New York practice. Confirm dates with the receiver of taxes.
Water, sewer, well, and septic. Downtown parcels are more likely to sit on public systems. Outlying Purchase and edge lots can differ. Confirm utility status for the exact parcel with the municipality and the serving water or sewer entity, and order inspections that fit the property.
Permits and certificates. Ask the Building Department at Town/Village Hall for open permits and certificates of occupancy before you list or close. Do not assume a renovated kitchen or finished basement was permitted.
Flood and environmental. Check the FEMA flood map for the parcel at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, especially near Silver Lake, streams, and low spots. Ask for an insurance quote early when maps show risk.
Rail and highway adjacency. Halstead Avenue and parkway-adjacent streets trade walkability or regional access for train and traffic noise. Visit at the hours you will actually live there.
Closing items. Ask for final utility readings where a parcel is on a public system, current tax receipts, open permit status, and any condo, co-op, or association documents when they apply.
Sellers. Accurate place language helps. Say "Town/Village of Harrison," then "Purchase" or "West Harrison" or "downtown / Halstead" when it is true. Do not imply Purchase is a separate town government, and do not invent a commute time.
There is no official primary-versus-second-home percentage for Harrison on this page, and we will not invent one. Our second homes guide covers that planning conversation more broadly.
None of these "wins." They answer different search patterns.
White Plains - the county seat immediately west of Harrison, denser downtown and commercial core, useful when buyers compare Harrison's Halstead strip to a larger city center.
Rye - city and coastal Sound geography southeast of Harrison; different water and downtown pattern than Halstead Avenue.
Mamaroneck - town and village pattern southwest of Harrison, with its own harbor and rail stops.
Larchmont - village in the Town of Mamaroneck, often compared when buyers want a compact Sound-shore village center.
Scarsdale - village to the west/southwest side of the broader map, useful when buyers widen Westchester comparisons.
Purchase and West Harrison - not separate town pages on this site. They are sections inside the Town/Village of Harrison. Say the place name and Harrison plainly.
Westchester County - county guide when the search is broader than one municipality.
Summaries list several National Register of Historic Places sites tied to Harrison geography. Confirm current designation and any exterior rules in state and federal records before you treat a listing as historic.
Stony Hill Road and the preserve edge preserve fragments of that earlier settlement story. Treat archaeology and cemetery rules seriously. Do not trespass on private property for photos.
Downtown density. Halstead Avenue has added rental and mixed-use product near the station, including Avalon Harrison. That changes parking, foot traffic, and the buyer pool for walk-to-train listings. Visit weekday morning and evening peak if rail access is the reason you are shopping there.
Purchase estate subdivision. County planning notes that recent residential development has often come from subdividing former estates in and near Purchase. Lot size, HOA or private-road rules, and remaining open acreage vary street by street. Read the survey and any association documents.
Corporate campus adjacency. Office parks along the I-287 corridor create daytime traffic and a different Saturday quiet than downtown Halstead. Neither pattern is better. They are different showing-day experiences.
Airport edge. Addresses near Westchester County Airport can hear aircraft. If that matters, schedule a showing when flight activity is typical for your routine, not only at noon on a Sunday.
